What is Dementia

Dementia is a general term used to describe a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. It affects memory, thinking, and social abilities. Dementia is not a single disease but a group of symptoms caused by various conditions. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, but there are several other types as well.

Common Symptoms of Dementia

  • Memory loss

  • Difficulty communicating or finding words

  • Problems with visual and spatial abilities

  • Difficulty reasoning or solving problems

  • Trouble handling complex tasks

  • Confusion and disorientation

  • Changes in personality and behaviour, such as depression, anxiety, and agitation.

Types of Dementia

  1. Alzheimer’s Disease

    • The most common type of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of cases.

    • Characterised by the formation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain.

    • Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, and changes in behaviour.

  2. Vascular Dementia

    • Caused by conditions that block or reduce blood flow to the brain, such as strokes.

    • Symptoms can vary but often include problems with planning, judgment, and memory.

  3. Lewy Body Dementia

    • Involves abnormal deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein in the brain.

    • Symptoms include visual hallucinations, movement disorders, and problems with attention and alertness.

  4. Frontotemporal Dementia

    • Caused by progressive nerve cell loss in the brain's frontal and temporal lobes.

    • Symptoms include changes in personality, behaviour, and language difficulties.

  5. Mixed Dementia

    • A combination of two or more types of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

    • Symptoms can be a mix of those associated with the different types.

Managing Dementia

While there is currently no cure for most types of dementia, treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms. These may include medications, cognitive therapies, and lifestyle changes to support brain health.
